Our commitment
Akaroa Dolphins is committed to being a sustainable business. We recognise our obligation to safeguard our natural environment and to ensure our activities have a nett positive impact.
We strive to give guests an authentic, educational, and luxurious experience, while protecting the environment and giving back to the community.
Conservation
We think beyond short-term gains and focus on long-term initiatives that enrich the environment and community for future generations.
In 2014, founders Hugh and Pip Waghorn helped establish the Akaroa Marine Reserve. Providing increased protections to our local wildlife, the establishment of a reserve has seen an increase in species returning to the area.
What we do
We educate the public to increase awareness of these endangered mammals. A percentage of each passenger's fare goes to the Department of Conservation to support marine research and education projects.
We’ve reduced the use of non-recyclable materials onboard and recycle where possible. This focus on our waste and energy consumption has helped reduce our carbon emissions across all areas of our operation.
We have a strong relationship with the New Zealand Whale & Dolphin Trust. Each year, our team members actively partake in research efforts, helping collect data for PhD projects on Hector’s dolphins.
Our team members have been trained as Project Jonah Marine Mammal Medics. This was put into place in 2017, after a whale stranding at nearby Robinson’s Bay showed us the need for trained personnel who could offer logistical help.
We lead by example, promoting a clean, safe harbour by encouraging the public and other boat operators to act responsibly. We remove any rubbish we see in the ocean, aiming to leave it better than we found it.
We employ local personnel where possible, providing jobs for those within the area. We believe in the importance of operating a fair business model and therefore pay all team members above the “living wage”.
We support small businesses by stocking locally made products and using local services wherever possible.
As part of the “Plastic Bag Free Akaroa” campaign, we have completely eliminated the use of single-use plastic bags from both our boats and shop.
Who we support
Having lived in Akaroa for generations, we’re passionate about giving back to our community. From volunteering on monitoring projects to providing funding for projects including Akaroa School’s reforestation project and the construction of Akaroa Hospital, we aim to help.
Here are a few of the ongoing programs we’re most proud of:
- Sponsors of annual SeaWeek conservation activities since 2004
- Participating in ocean debris clean-ups since 2004
- Corporate members of Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust since 2009
- Sponsors of the Tui Project since 2009
