Happy Lighthouse Day ( 7th of August )
 

While on our cruise you will see the beautiful Akaroa Lighthouse from the water. Below is a little history of this famous landmark.

On the 4th of October in 1980 one of our most iconic landmarks in Akaroa, the Akaroa Lighthouse, completed its move from the Akaroa Heads to its present location in the township.

The original Akaroa Lighthouse started operation on the headland of Akaroa Heads in 1880. 100 years later it was moved to the Akaroa Township after being replaced by an automated light. Akaroa Heads lighthouse was classed as one of the worst posts for a lighthouse keeper to get, due to the wild southerlies which come straight from Antarctica.

Today a roster of volunteers 'man' the lighthouse in its new location, to enable the public to visit and view one of the few remaining examples of early wooden lighthouses in New Zealand. All funds raised are reinvested into maintaining the lighthouse for all to enjoy. To learn more CLICK HERE!
